LastPass, The Password Gold Standard, has set the new standard on what NOT to do when breached.

 

LastPass has shed light on the series of cyberattacks that took place last year, leading to the theft of the renowned password manager’s source code and customer vault data. Cybersecurity experts recognize that the threat actor responsible for these security breaches was involved in reconnaissance, enumeration, and exfiltration activities between August 12th and October 26th. During this time, the attacker obtained credentials from a senior DevOps engineer, enabling them to access shared cloud storage containing encryption keys for customer vault backups stored in Amazon S3 buckets. This approach made it difficult to distinguish between legitimate and suspicious activities. The engineer fell victim to an exploit in a vulnerable third-party media software package on their home computer, suspected to be the Plex media platform, leading to the installation of keylogger malware.

The keylogger malware allowed the threat actor to capture the employee’s master password upon entry, after multi-factor authentication, and gain access to the DevOps engineer’s LastPass corporate vault. Since these incidents, LastPass has implemented various security measures to protect its platform, including revoking certificates, rotating attacker-known credentials, and enhancing logging and alerting throughout its cloud storage. Additionally, the company has published a comprehensive list of compromised data from both security breaches on a dedicated support page, as well as a PDF detailing the incidents and two further security bulletins for LastPass customers with suggested actions to secure their accounts.

Despite its popularity, LastPass’s recent security breaches and handling of these incidents have raised significant concerns about the company’s reliability in the IT space. The fact that a threat actor was able to infiltrate the system and exfiltrate customer vault data and source code underscores a lack of proper security measures. Moreover, the company’s response has been less than transparent, as shown by their attempts to hide information about the breaches by adding HTML tags to prevent updates from being indexed by search engines. This lack of transparency, along with the breaches themselves, inevitably calls into question LastPass’s commitment to security. As a result, managed service providers (MSPs) and users may need to reconsider the level of trust placed in LastPass to safeguard their sensitive data.

First and foremost, it is important to emphasize that the attack vector in this case was a spear-phishing email, which led to the compromise of session tokens. Spear-phishing attacks are highly targeted and rely on social engineering to manipulate the target into performing specific actions, like downloading and opening malicious attachments. This incident underscores the need for continuous user awareness training to help employees recognize and avoid falling victim to such attacks.

Moreover, the fact that session tokens were stolen indicates that organizations should consider implementing additional security measures to protect these sensitive pieces of information. For example, organizations can adopt solutions such as browser isolation or browser sandboxing, which effectively limit the exposure of sensitive data by running web browsing sessions in an isolated environment.

It is also worth discussing Linus Sebastian’s recommendations for YouTube to prevent future breaches of a similar nature. Implementing greater security options for certain channel attributes, like requiring a password or two-factor authentication for changing the name of a channel, would indeed be a helpful additional layer of security.
